We have been searching for bacon

So this is how it goes....

I have read all these fabulous US post's about getting bacon that is paleo friendly. Unfortunately, living in Perth we don't have the demand for producers to provide paleo friendly products like bacon.  In many cases I have to buy my almond meal in 400g packets. Bulk buying is not that much cheaper.  Maybe I am not looking in the right places.  I really don't have the time to go searching for great stockists of things that I need for the food we cook.  So I stumble.

Well yesterday while Man and I were looking for different places to buy our groceries we stumbled across an organic/free range butcher who stocks...... nitrate free bacon.  There are no numbers on the packet at all. The bacon itself is a Mondo's https://www.mondo.net.au/wholesale/supplies.php product and is cured in salt and sugar.  While I could do without the sugar part of the curing process I am happy to endure this rather than purchase the bacon from other retailers with a litany of chemical numbers on their ingredient panel.

The butcher is http://www.prontogourmet.com.au/ (Pronto Gourmet Butchers) in Mosman Park.  The butcher also let us try some of the Mondo's ham, similarly cured. OMG YUM!!!!!  The only draw back is that these products are twice the price of non numbered bacon and ham. I can deal with that. The taste is superior to other products also.

The meat looks beautiful in this butcher shop.  I will be going again.

If you pop in tell them that the Urban Cave Girl sent you.

Happy Hunting and Gathering.

Please read and share

Hi All

I have just read a blog by PaleoHacks.  As there is no point repeating what has already been said I am re-posting:  I would also like to say look the guy up.

The views of this particular blog post that you will read reflect how myself and Man view the paleo lifestyle.  It makes us feel good.  We have more energy. We are more alert. We sleep better.  We engage with the world in a more positive way.  This could be because we are consciously doing something positive for ourselves, a kind of placebo effect,or  it could be what we are eating or a combination.  We don't really analyse it too much.  We both know this works for us.

Personally I am also noticing what my emotional "go to's" are.  They come in the form of Carbs and Vino oh and SUGAR.  I would not have known this had I not eliminated them from my diet.

We are not fundamentalist about our approach. However we are excited and happy to share our experience as we want to share the Paleo Love!

So give this a read.  Let me know what you think about it.

More to come.
Much thanks to Paleohacks. Love your work

Well It's Been A While

Although I haven't blogged for a while I have been out a number of times since the last blogfest.

I went to a philosophy do at a place called The Corner Room in South Fremantle.   Although the event was a shambles the food L & I ordered was fabulous.  It's a not too expensive place for a bite and even though the staff were run of their feet they were delightful and helpful.

L & I ordered the same thing. Frenched Lamb Cutlets that originially came with a breaded crust.  We asked if we could have ours without the crust and no side grain but extra salad and they obliged with a smile.  This is what we love to see.  We would more than likely go there again.

Craving Mashed Potato - Try This

It is pretty clear that even in the early stages of this blog, it is evolving.

I am writing this blog in my lunch hour after consuming an alcohol free osso bucco (who knew this was a possibility) served with a yummy white mash of fennel and parsnip.  I have been craving mashed spuds the last couple of days.  You know the ones.  Cooked with garlic in the water and mashed to within an inch of their lives with loads of good butter. So I needed a paleo alternative while I am Whole 30ing.

My Osso Bucco is usually show cased on  a plate of yummy mashed potatoes but I wanted the Osso Bucco which was paleo friendly but the mash is not.  So I searched my brain data banks and remembered having a mash of fennel and something else.  I couldn't remember what the 'something' was so i figured parsnip was the right colour and probably the right texture to make a mashy kind of thing.  But then I had a light bulb moment.  Puree. So here is how it goes.

1 large fennel bulb with the tops chopped off
1 parsnip peeled
virgin olive oil to taste

Method

Bring a saucepan of water to the boil add some salt.
Cut the vegies all about the same size.  There is no need to take the outer fennel off unless it is really mucky.
Put the veggies in the pan and simmer until tender.  A fork should easily go through them.  The parsnip will be about the same consistency as a potato ready for mashing.
Drain and pop the veg into a food processor with a blade.  Add oil  and whizz.

Be careful to whizz the veg till there are no big bits.

Serve & enjoy.

What do you take to a brunch at friends?

I guess this is part of the conversation we are having.

L & I were invited to a brunch at friends today.  We were asked to bring something which is great. So what do you take when you are Paleo?  We decided that we would take what we could eat.  L made a lovely banana bread.  The recipe for this lovely loaf was taken from "The Civilised Caveman".  You can find the recipe here: http://civilizedcavemancooking.com/grain-free-goodies/paleo-banana-bread/  We also took a fruit platter however our hosts had a fabulous fruit platter already on the table.  I also took date paste rolls coated in crushed almonds.

We also wanted a drink that was low in sugar, calories but was a bit special as we are a bit over water. So we took our standby coconut water and a bottle of Britvic Purdeys multivitamin drink. This drink is great to take to a party.  It looks like champagne and tastes lovely with low-ish sugar.

So we had enough to sup on if we found nothing else to eat that was Paleo friendly.  However we had bacon and eggs supplied by our hosts.  It was lovely to sit around and not have to worry about food choices.

Another plus was that one of the guests is gluten intolerant and we were able to share our loaf and some ideas with her.  She enjoyed the loaf and was the impetus for this post.

In the future I will post some of the things we take to social outings to friends places.  I will also let you know what Paleo friends are bringing to out place that is paleo friendly.

Dinner in Subiaco - Jus Burger

We went out to see "Drift" a movie filmed in our south west. The movie was great but we knew we would want a feed afterwards.  So before we left I did a quick Urbanspoon search for cheap eats in Subi.

A list of 20 places were revealed and we decided on Jus Burgers.  What a fabulous choice. As those of you who know eating out paleo can be a challenge.  Not at this place.  They have little notes on the menu for Pregnant women, Halal only eaters, vegans AND paleo.  They don't say paleo directly but they do say that you can have any burger with out the bun with extra salad at the same price.  We were stoked.

I chose a Roo Burger. Beautiful kangaroo mince burger (no bun). It comes out with lettuce on the top and bottom in place of the bread.  The patties are pretty big and there were two on my plate along with a lovely assortment of salad and a bit of mayo.  L chose the beef burger. Again presented in the same way and he asked for his with none of the sauces.  I ordered them on the side.  They were an aioli and a relish.  My burger came with green chilli jam which I decided to have on the side in case it was too spicy. It was.  So I am glad I made the choice.
Original Beef Burger with sauces on the side as requested

When ordering the staff were accommodating with no questions asked. We chose a bottle of sparkling mineral water and had a fabulous meal.  It cost around $37 in total which is a cheap meal out. We chose to sit outside and the atmosphere was subtly festive.

I highly recommend Jus Burgers in Subiaco for paleo and non paleo alike.
A closer look at the Roo Burger and the Green Chilli Jam.
I couldn't help myself had to take a bite before the photo was taken.

Where to for lunch?

So there we were.  Looking for sustenance.  This 'cool' suburban cafe' did not cut it so what to do.

To be honest we were looking for a Raw Food cafe' I had been told about at a recent baby shower. (Baby shower's are not really my deal but this one was for a special person... my sister.). Anyway, one of the guests brought these fabulous raw food chocolate cup cakes and I had one. They were amazing and yes...before I hear a 'that's not Whole 30' it was not until I had demolished one that I found out it had added sweetening of some organic maple syrup.  The damage was done and I LOVED the cup cake.

From this faux pa a discussion developed with the raw food cup cake maker.  She told me that there were a couple of raw food cafe's around Freo and she advised me to check them out.

L & I tried to go to one in Fremantle itself however parking was going to be difficult. We had the SUP boards on the car and wanted to park close by and in the open.  Parking was not showing itself and I got perturbed so I drove to where I thought the cupcake maker had described.

So along we drove looking for a Muzz Buzz and it was supposed to be over the road. We could not see it.  This is when we found the afore mentioned 'cool' cafe.  When we left that place we tried again.  The place we ended up at was Fern Community Centre Raw Food Cafe. Can anyone say AWESOME!

This place was quirky, a bit hippy and I expected it to be full of breast feeding mothers.  It wasn't.

It was charming, and the food was delicious.   It's vegan and dairy free.  We were a bit concerned by the little bit of corn on our plate but we worked our way around that.

So what was for lunch?  Well I had an Italian Wrap.  I think the wrap was made out of some kind of nut and spinach and I detected beetroot in it.  It was dehydrated into an actual wrap and filled with sun dried tomato, olives and lovely fresh salad with 4 salads on the plate as sides.  A beetroot one, a carrot and raisin one and a cabbage salad with corn.  I had a cold pressed chai which was to die for.  It was made with nut milk and cold pressed chai. What is cold pressed you may ask.  Well the lovely lady who runs the show said that they soak the chai or coffee over night and then press the chai or coffee until all the liquid comes out.  The first one was rich and yummy.  The second was a bit watery but still tasty.  I did feel a little let down as my expectation had been created by the first drink.

L had a pizza... yes that's right: a grain free pizza. it looked delicious(see pics below).  we also shared a Mud Slide pie.  And yes it was sweetened with agave. Another fall from grace from our Whole 30. At least it was completely paleo. Now don't ask me how they made this beautiful raw pie but it was delicious.

As for the decor.  Don't expect swish seating.  It all looks like it is recycled from offices and street garbage pick ups but it is comfortable and fits in with the theme.  There is even a little kids play area.  Trees are shady and the garden is full of edible plants in raised beds. A little ramshackle but charming and inviting.

We will definitely go again. It was relaxing and offbeat but the people are lovely.

Where to eat when you're Paleo in Perth

L and I are new Paleo People. We like to go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner more than occasionally.  We have been doing the "Whole 30" and are managing quite nicely, thank you very much.  We have just completed Day 19 and are feeling comfortable with what we can and can't consume.  We have been out for a couple of breakky's and they are pretty easy as long as you stay away from creamy sauces and the bread they try and pile on your plate.

When we go out we get a breakky burger and get rid of the bread. This is not ideal but we have been surprised how many cafe's have most or all choices including some kind of grain, legume or dairy product.

For example we went to a suburban "cool" cafe' today after a session of stand up paddling, famished, body tired and yelling out for food to find the menu contained not a single item that we could order without modifying.  We just left that one in search for some more Paleo friendly establishment.

This is what this blog is about.  It won't be a daily and probably not a weekly blog but it will be regular as we like to go out and enjoy some people watching over some sparking water (until the 30 days is up) and a good Paleo feed.

I will endeavour to share our experiences of Paleo friendly eateries around Perth.  My hope is this blog serves as a guide for other newbie Paleo's.

Good eating to you all
